Bernd Stange nominated for German Football Ambassador award

The new Singapore coach was honoured as one of five candidates for the prestigious award, which recognises German coaches and players who have enhanced the country's reputation
Singapore national team coach Bernd Stange was honoured as a nominee for the German Football Ambassador 2013 by initiative founder Roland Bischof, who introduced it in 2001 under the patronage of football coaching legend Rudi Gutendorf, at the Jalan Besar Stadium on Monday.Stange was nominated for the illustrious award alongside other four other for the award, which aims to recognise German coaches and players who have contributed to a positive reputation of Germany through their sporting engagements abroad.
The German native also received the thumbs up by Football Association of Singapore (FAS) president Zainudin Nordin for his nomination.
“We are proud to hear that coach Bernd is one of the five celebrated German coaches who has been nominated for his accomplishments abroad," he stated.
Joining Stange in the running for the award were former German international Jurgen Klinsmann, Otto Pfister, Philippines national team coach Michael Weiss, and eventual winner Holger Obermann.
The winner was picked by a panel of five German football experts that includes former Geylang international goalkeeper Lutz Pfannenstiel, who holds the record for being the only player to have played professionally in five different continents.
Just like the other nominees, Stange will be donating his prize money to organisations for footballing purposes, with the Singapore Cerebral Palsy football team set to benefit.
“I feel extremely honoured to have been nominated for the prestigious German Football Ambassador Award," he said.
“It reflects the recognition of my work in a diverse set of countries and environments by the German football community.
“Besides aiming for success on the pitch, my activities have also always been based on higher values and broader purposes.
“I would like to see the donation of my award to the Singapore Cerebral Palsy Football team as an extension of the National Team being a role model and a major driver in the development of football at every level in Singapore.”
The Cerebral Palsy team's coach Mohamed Zainudeen was present at the event to receive the mock cheques from the Lions gaffer.
“We are definitely encouraged by the support from coach Bernd Stange and FAS," he gratefully said.
“We are certain that this will further propel the team to strive towards their ultimate goal to achieve good results at the 2014 ASEAN Para Games.
“We also wish to send a positive message to all Singaporeans to dare to dream of achieving great things in life.”
